To Healigan's 2014-2105 CLASSES: Check out these links, look at the videos, read the note at the top (after the row of dollar signs). You may also want to scroll down to the questions you should be asking yourself and then, the section entitled "PLACES TO START." It is YOUR internet, but you have to TAKE CONTROL of it.
Who are you on the Internet? Have you considered the impression you leave every single time you go online? Because the digital world is "new" and evolving daily, your Curriculum Vitae (resume) online develops very differently than a portfolio of schoolwork that you store in a desk--manila folder, stapled essays, handwritten comments from teachers on tests. Did your parents keep your papers from grade school? Chances are they did. Well, since the first day you appeared on the scene on the day of your birth, you have been creating an Electronic Portfolio (whether or not you thought about it) of every digital experience you have ever had. It is time to begin managing it. The Internet remembers everything about you. I choose to think it is cool: the internet knows I am Leslie Healey and it also knows I am Healigan. Better yet, it reliably connects me with my family, work, my ideas, my writing, what I think is beautiful, fun, intriguing or frustrating. So, the internet stores it, but I should be the one to manage it and track my own progress. This project is meant to be a beginning, an entry-level review of your own digital life.
OLD PROJECT: Your mission: write your own digital resume. You will provide me with a two-part document titled "XXX's DIGITAL DOSSIER" which will contain 1) a list of what already exists on the internet about you. You will find every place and/or LIVE link that you can that contains a specific reference to you. Specific references can include photos, music, videos, notes, chats, documents, articles, news stories, etc. For sources you have visited often or have a detailed history with, like Facebook, you will classify and quantify the references as follows: # of photos which tag you, who tags you, # of fan pages or networks you belong to, # of visits to multiplayer online games etc. You must include a list of at least 10 types of connections you have found, or that you know you have made, even if you believe those links do not exist anymore. 2) You will imagine what you would like to pop up when you google yourself (and this is assuming that we will still be googling) 10 years from now in 2024. I am expecting 5 "links" that you can create for the future you, the one that is preparing to attend your 10-year high school reunion. What kinds of links you design/imagine depends on you: do you want wedding photos to show up? How about your first book on amazon.com? Will you have a LinkedIn account? Will you be a famous website designer? This half of the document is imaginary, so I would like you to format it as if it were a list of links that pop up when you google yourself: an imaginary URL with 2-3 lines of description for each entry. The links do not have to be live, since this is fantasy. I am expecting you to dig deep, think "outside the box" to discover what corners of the digital universe will contain some piece of you as well as what places will include "future" you.
I have included the original DIGITAL DOSSIER video above as an introduction to the topic. You can use the additional links and videos on this page to assist you as you begin your search for YOU online. Please try these and notify everyone else when you discover a new way to access your own digital life. Some of what you know is online is not tracked easily by a website or Google, and you will have to track it yourself.
For instance, do you know how many photos of you are tagged on Facebook? Do you know who has tagged you? Why does Google care so much that you join Google+? Why do I recommend that you NOT join Google+ when we are creating Googledocs? Do you have a YouTube or DeviantArt site? Where do your Snapchats go? What is the business model for Kik or YikYak? How do they make money? What have you bought online?
How does Instagram decide what pics show up when you hit "explore"? Does Apple track your iCloud? How about an OpenID account? What IS an OpenID account? Do you share your playlists on any networks? Do you use Pandora, Soundcloud, Spotify or another service for music sharing or listening?
How does Amazon.com know what kind of videos you might buy? Have you ever been fingerprinted? What is a Google alert? What games do you play online? What pops up about you if you google St Marks + your name? Have you posted to this wiki or our blog this year? Are you addicted to perezhilton.com? Do you comment on online blog posts or news sites? (Sometimes you have to register with a site to comment, which means they track you.)
And when this project is over…where should you keep your digital dossier? Where will it be "safe"--is "safe" is still possible anywhere?
The questions could go on and on.............for this project, thinking of the right questions will be half the battle. You will submit your rough draft of this assignment on Studywiz. I have set up an eLocker just for this project. I strongly suggest that you save a copy for yourself in digital form--either on a pen drive, a digital dropbox, or your computer at home. Update it regularly.
